Therapy Approaches

Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, relationship challenges, or simply want to gain a deeper insight into your thoughts and behaviours, I am committed to working with you in a collaborative way, towards exploration and change.

As a pluralistic practitioner, I believe that no single therapeutic method works for everyone. Each person is unique, and different people benefit from different methods at different times. For this reason, I am trained in a wide range of evidence-based psychological therapies, which have been shown to be effective for a broad range of difficulties.

As an integrative Chartered Counselling Psychologist, I draw on a range of therapy models in combination (or isolation), which enables me to bring together the effective practices and elements of all approaches to promote positive therapeutic change. These stances allow me to tailor our work together to suit your individual goals, preferences, and ways of understanding the world. Please see below a list of the therapeutic approaches I am trained in.

My main approaches:

Humanistic, Person-Centred Therapy - This approach focuses on the natural tendency for human psychological growth and self-actualisation. It emphasises on providing therapeutic conditions such as unconditional positive regard, empathic listening and a non-judgemental stance to facilitate client’s growth.

Psychodynamic Therapy - This approach focuses on the person’s early childhood relationships and how they have shaped their present-day patterns of relating to themselves and others; as well as exploring the person’s emotional coping strategies. This approach helps clients to gain insight and understanding in order to facilitate change.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - This approach can be a more active form of therapy. It involves helping clients to identify and change their unhelpful cognitive processes (i.e., thoughts. beliefs or assumptions) and behaviours that may be contributing to their mental health difficulties.

My therapeutic practice is grounded in evidence-based therapies, that are flexible, compassionate, and tailored to the unique needs of each client.

Schema Therapy - This is an approach that addresses problems that typically originate in childhood. Schema therapy focuses on helping clients to meet their core emotional needs. It helps people to understand their difficulties and overcome lifelong intrapersonal or interpersonal patterns; thereby facilitating therapeutic change.

Compassion Focused Therapy - This approach focuses on redressing imbalances in the three emotion regulation systems in the brain. The therapy aims to strengthen the persons ‘soothing system’ to help them regulate their emotions and reduce psychological and emotional distress.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy - This therapeutic stance encourages patients to adopt a new way of being and relating to their thoughts and feelings, whilst placing little emphasis on altering or challenging specific cognitions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - Rather than suppressing or avoiding painful thoughts and feelings, ACT aims to help individuals accept uncomfortable experiences through a process of developing greater psychological flexibility. ACT simultaneously helps individuals commit to actions that align with their values, in areas such as personal growth, intimate relationships, and meaningful work; leading to a more fulfilling life.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy - This approach involves a careful integration of interventions that constantly aim to balance validation and acceptance with change-oriented strategies in the most effective possible way. It involves teaching clients a variety of psychological skills to help them overcome their challenges.
